Coimbra is about 2 hours north of Lisbon, clustered over the River Mondego, and home to the oldest university in Portugal. As a great university (1288) students came from Lisbon and Porto and brought their guitars. Over a century and a half ago, a new style of Fado was born. Portugal is one of the hottest emerging destinations in Europe. American travel jumped by more then 20% this year in terms of overnights and visitors (January to July), TAP launched two new gateway cities from the US, United kicked off DC-Lisbon flights, and Delta announced it will offer a new nonstop from JFK.
