April 01, 2013
Katia
Guerreiro was born in South Africa, but her family returned to the Azores a few
years later. Raised on São Miguel Island, she discovered her passion for music
and fell in love with the “Viola da Terra,” a traditional guitar of the Azores
at the age of 15. Later, she moved to Lisbon to attend the Medical School and became
the vocalist of a rock band.
In 2000, she sang Fado for the first time in a tribute concert to Amália Rodrigues in Coliseu dos Recreios, in Lisbon. She surprised the audience and the critics with her interpretation of “Amor de Mel, Amor de Fel” and “Barco Negro”.
Fado Maior, her first album, was released in 2001 and introduced Katia Guerreiro as one of the new generation Fado singers. From Portugal to the world was just a little step. Over the next few years, Katia and Fado were applauded in many different stages and countries such as France, Morocco, Belgium, England, Wales, Egypt, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Greece, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Tunisia, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Canada, South Africa, New Caledonia, Turkey and India.
Currently, Katia Guerreiro is preparing the release of her first live DVD, recorded in 2012 in the Olympia, in Paris, a new album and the 2013 tour, which will take her voice to many countries such as France, Spain and Russia.
