Words that pair well with the Azores are "adventure," "discoveries," "mystery" and "adrenaline." You can do it all the simple way: explore the trails of these volcanic islands and discover the magnificent viewpoint around each bend. Or you can discover these nine islands with the outdoor treasure hunting game Geocaching.

Geocaching is a real-world hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. You just need to register at www.geocaching.com to download a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. To play it, you only need a GPS device or a GPS-enabled cell phone so that you can navigate to the cache.

When you discover the cache, you will find a logbook - where you can write about your find - and some objects that you might trade for something of equal or greater value.

Geocaches can be found all over the world. It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations that are important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. And that’s why you can find about 543 around the nine islands.

These locations can be quite diverse. They may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street. These caches can take you to must-see places or to unexpected views and secret spots. On the website, you can also check some pictures where of the location, find some tips and reviews from the other users.

For the second year in a row, the European Coastal and Marine Union has named the Azores as the Top European ‘green’ destination – and geocaching also follows the practice “Cache In Trash Out”. While out treasure hunting, the geocachers are encouraged to bring a bag to pick up trash along the way and contribute to preserve the most beautiful places in the world.

Our advice? Come to the Azores and find out your treasures.
