Faial: unknown coral reef discovered

A group of researchers have discovered a 1,000 square yard coral reef the south of the island of Faial. Using the submarine Lula in 1000 members of the Rebikoff-Niggeler Foundation were struck by the vastness of the reef. A coral reef is a structure formed by living corals growing on hard skeletons of other coral, creating a complex three-dimensional structure that offers various micro-habitats for marine life. This newly found reef is just off the coast of Faial.

The Rebikoff-Niggeler Foundation is headquartered in Horta and has as main goal to document the deep sea, having built two submarines, the latest of which, Lula in 1000 which can descend to a depth of 1,000 meters.
