A  new Azores ultramarathon and half-marathon called the Azores Trail Run will be held on May 24, 2014. An ultramarathon  is an  event involving a run that is longer than 42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi).

Faial Island will host runners from around the globe to meet the challenge of the Faial Ultra Coast to Coast and the Trail of Ten Volcanoes.

The Azores Running Trail (ATR) is an initiative of the Blue Island Athletics Independent Club and will go through  the   Faial Natural Park – voted as a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) by the European Commission and the only one in Portugal awarded with this classification.
