New Pousada of the Serra da Estrela Mountains Opens
April 09, 2014
Standing on the top of the mountain, almost 4,000 feet high, the former retreat is now a brand new Pousada of Portugal. The project was developed by Eduardo Souto Moura, Pritzker Prize winner, that restored the historic clinic building of Penhas da Saude to the sophistication and splendor of old times. It opens April 1, 2014.
The Pousada of Serra da Estrela represents a new concept in bigger dimension Pousadas and it will open with 92 rooms, spa, pool, meeting rooms and restaurant. Every detail was planned so that the new project would embrace the original style of the original building from the early 20th century. The initial project was designed by Cottinelli Telmo in the 1920s. By the 1980s, the retreat had a reputation for hosting the greatest snow carnival party. The party would last all night long with music and food. Inside and outdoors, the retreat would be filled with people ready to enjoy one of the biggest events of the year.
With its opening the Pousada of Serra da Estrela brings life back to a cherished landmark and ends the period of several decades of recovery hope by locals. This long waited project gives continuity to the work of heritage recovering lead by the Group Pestana.
