June 13, 2014
The 2014 Sanjoaninas, festivities dedicated to São João in the Azores, will take place in Angra do Heroísmo from June 20 to 28th, 2014 . The festivities this year will also celebrate the 30 anniversary of Angra’s nomination as UNESCO’s World Heritage.
The Sanjoaninas started in the 16th century as non-religious celebrations and nowadays they continue to play a key role in the local culture and attract many tourists to Terceira Island, in the Azores. Over eight days many cultural and recreational activities will share the island’s traditions and habits.
The highlight of the Sanjoaninas is the Sao Joao Parade, the march of the queen and then include floats based on the many of the amazing things you can do when visiting the Azores – whale watching, swimming with dolphins, good cuisine, local products, music, typical local bull runs and street parties.
