Maré de Agosto brings a “tidal wave” of music to Santa Maria, Azores

The annual music festival Maré de Agosto, on the island of Santa Maria, Azores, will run this year from August 21 to the 23. The festival, one of the oldest of the kind in the Azores, is celebrating its 30th year. And it will be help, as usual, on the sandy beach of Praia Formosa.
The Cultural Association Maré de Agosto promotes the Maré de Agosto, literally translated as “Tide of August,” Its origins date back to 1984 when a group of artists decided to promote in the island as a meeting point for local musicians. Since then, it has hosted many well know national and international musicians and singers.
This year’s line-up includes Portuguese Fado singer Mariza and many others from world music to DJ’s. Workshops, theatre and photography events are also part of the Festival that brings each year new tourists to island that has 5,000 residents.
