Portugal scores big at the 2014 'Oscars' of European tourism
Portugal nearly doubles the number of 2013 awards with a record 16
Portugal came to the World Travel Awards Europe ceremony with more than 40 nominations and ended up setting the record for 'Oscars' of European tourism with 16 wins. This comes after winning nine in 2013 World Travel Awards Europe - with the Algarve being the best destination for beaches, Madeira as the best island destination, and Lisbon the as best destination for getaways.
The biggest awards of the tourism industry were held recently in Athens, Greece.
Lisbon was the best port and cruise destination. Madeira repeated with the distinction of best islands to vacation on. TAP was the best airline with the links to Africa and South America. Cruise operator DouroAzul was declared best river cruise company. And, Turismo de Portugal was voted the best official tourism organization in Europe.
But the awards for Portugal did not end there: hotels, mostly in the Algarve and Madeira, took top honors, including: Conrad Algarve (best luxury resort), Bairro Alto Hotel (best historic heritage hotel), Choupana Hills (best boutique resort), Vila Joya (best boutique hotel), The Vine (best design hotel), Pestana Porto Santo (best all-inclusive resort), Pine Cliffs (best hotel residences) or Martinhal Resort (best villa resort). The country also now has the "most romantic resort in Europe"- an award given to the Vila Vita Parc.
Portugal took home even more "Oscars” in sub-regional categories, with the strength of its hotels: Quinta da Casa Branca (boutique hotel) and Penha Longa (spa resort). There were awards for the best of each country represented with winners ranging from the renovated Terra Nostra Garden Hotel to the Sheraton Algarve, from the Pousada de Cascais and the Hotel Quinta do Lago to the Vilalara.
The World Travel Awards are voted on online throughout the year for both travel professionals and the general public. The complete list of award winners can be seen at: www.worldtravelwards.com.
