The Palácio do Governador Palácio do Governador is reborn as a boutique hotel in the historic Belém district

The former residence of the Governor of the Tower of Belém will now be home to Lisbon’s newest boutique hotel. The Palácio do Governador, operated by the NAU Hotels & Resorts group, just opened in the Portuguese capital with 60 guest rooms, a premium restaurant, a large spa, an outdoor swimming pool and many other facilities.

The Palácio do Governador Palácio do Governais located in the historic center of Belém, near the Tejo Riverfront, across from the Tower of Belém, one of Portugal’s most important monuments.

The building itself is steeped in the history of Portugal and Lisbon, owing to its history both as residence to the Governors of the Tower of Belém from the sixteenth century onward and to the Roman ruins recently unearthed during the refurbishment of the building. These ruins, dating between the 1st-and the 5th century, when the space was home to a fish sauce factory, have been duly preserved and incorporated in the establishment’s facade.

Additionally, the building's architecture and interior were designed to revive and highlight the splendour of the period of the Portuguese Exploration, blending in the comfort of contemporary elements harmoniously for an unforgettable experience. The duo of architects Jorge Cruz Pinto and Maria Cristina Mantas were in charge of the entire design and architectural implementation of the project, and Nini Andrade Silva was the interior designer responsible for the unique interior decor and design for this establishment.

Beneath the courtyard of the entry to the Palácio do Governador lies the preserved “caetaria” (stone vats) of the Ancient Roman fish sauce factory, and from where amphorae of “garum” were exported to the entire Roman world.

The lobby is located in the former Chapel, its walls panelled with azulejos (Portuguese tiles) restored to their original beauty, accompanied by the original wooden choir stall and double-height ceilings.

This genuine historical and architectural legacy manifests itself in each of the hotel’s five floors: in the vaulted ceilings of the restaurant, the consecutive arches of the ground floor rooms, in the azulejo-wainscoting in the guestrooms and suites, and in the Roman ruins standing watch over the indoor pool and which have been integrated into the very architecture of the hotel’s common spaces.

The south-facing terraces offer guests and visitors a terrace with views of the outdoor pool, the Belém Tower and the River Tejo.

The hotel offers 60 rooms, each one distinct and different, among which one should single out the Princess’s Suite, the Governor's Suite, and the Infante’s Suite, which thanks to their historical elements and size make them one-of-a-kind.

The Palácio do Governador Palácio do Governador also offers different room types including: Deluxe Rooms, Club Rooms, Mansard, Junior Suites and Studio Suites., each of which offering its own particular appeal with wooden ceilings and .

Cuisine is one of the highlights of the new hotel, which sees the Amphora restaurant can seat 80 guests indoors and a further 60 on the terrace, it also has a private dining room for up to 18 people and service features auteur cuisine prepared with the masterful skill of Chef André Lança Cordeiro.
