Castle of Penela still defends the road to Coimbra

Castle of Penela stands over the town of the same name, south of Coimbra, Portugal. The castle formed part of the lines of the Mondego River protecting Coimbra in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The hill has been occupied since ancient times.
The castle walls enclose an area of about 1 acre. It is in the shape of a polygon with granite walls.
