December 19, 2015
The amazing Tower of Dornes is located in the tiny quaint Village of Dornes, Ferreira do Zêzere, in Portugal. The ancient tower may have been built on Roman tower attributed to Sertório, Roman general of c. 72 A.C.E. It is in a rare pentagonal water tower in stone and masonry, on a small peninsula on the Zêzere River.
At the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, it was given to the Knights Templar. The Templar rebuilt the tower of Dornes in an unusual shape, with five side make it a very rare example of military architecture of the Reconquista times. Built by Gualdim Pais for the defense of the Tejo Valley.
