Honey of a Cake - Bolo de Mel

Honey of a Cake
Bolo de Mel (Madeira honey cake) is considered to be Madeira's oldest dessert. But it has no honey in it…
The Bolo de Mel was crafted when the island was an important sugar producer, since the cake itself is made with molasses – and it could be sold to passing ships, as it would stay fresh for 5-years.
Today, the cake often includes walnuts and almonds – and the tradition is to tear pieces off by hands. It is that good!
