Vinho verde - the green is in the taste!
March 04, 2018
Green, yes green wine. No we are not kidding, it only comes from Portugal! not from its color, but because it's fresh, and is made in a very green area, the Minho region of Northern Portugal. It's always enjoyed young, and is light, crisp, low in alcohol and even a little bubbly. And, this fresh refreshing wine is about $10 for a bottle. Here is the inside bit you like - it comes in white (that you knew) and red. The only red wine that needs to be served very cold.. and tastes like nothing else toy have ever had… and is really good.
Vinho verde is made with Portuguese grapes varietals such as alvarinho, loureiro, trajadura and pederna- all which are lower in alcohol.
In olden days, the Portuguese trained the vines to grow up trees, struggling to pick the grapes from ladders, to preserve the ground beneath for valuable food crops. Today the vines are trained low, on wire trellises, so they can be picked by machines for greater efficiency.
The vinho verde region goes from just north of Porto to the Minho river valley. There is a wonderful a Vinho Verde Route, filled with vineyards, historical landmarks, hotels, restaurants and other attractions that is popular with visitors
