Every year, the lodging platform Airbnb ranks the most welcoming cities in Portugal according to guests' reviews. In 2018, Funchal (Madeira) got the best rating, followed by Aljezur (Alentejo) and Vila Nova de Gaia (North).

Among the top 10 is also Sintra, Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Cascais. This survey collects the opinions of people booking private homes as an alternative accommodation option, that has a positive impact on more isolated communities.

These unconventional destinations (Lisbon and Porto are not on the list) show that Portugal's cultural and historic heritage cities are growing as destinations on the map of modern tourism.
