Évora, rising from the plains of Portugal's Alentejo
February 26, 2019
Évora is a beautiful city in the Alentejo, inside Medieval walls, with a culture and vibe all its own.
Évora is a true city-museum, selected as World Heritage by Unesco in 1986. Its walls hide streets and buildings practically unchanged over the centuries. A wealth of history and culture as well as food and wine make Évora a world class destination.
Évora is set in its imposing walls. Inside are vestiges of the Roman period, medieval buildings, palaces and convents that are highlights from the golden age of Portugal (15th and 16th centuries).
The religious influence in the city of Évora is clear in its many churches including the Colégio do Espírito Santo, now the University of Évora, founded by the Jesuits.. This is a walkable city, with rich architecture and immaculate white houses in the narrow streets and alleys. And, of course, the kindness of the people of Évora and Alentejo is so welcoming.
Being so diversified, the richness of Évora in terms of culture and heritage makes this the ideal place to visit alone, with family, with friends or on a romantic trip.
