United States and Portugal launch a new 12-month program allowing US citizens to study, work and travel in Portugal
December 18, 2019
The United States and Portugal recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Youth Mobility that allows American students and university graduates to apply for a new 12-month Study, Work and Travel Program in Portugal.
The MoU signed between both countries foresees that up to 400 Americans, each year, can pursue professional or academic opportunities in Portugal, and travel. Eligible candidates must be US citizens with a passport that is valid for the entire duration of the stay, and must either be enrolled in a US accredited post-secondary institution, or be recent graduates (within 12 months of graduation). Working under the program is allowed for up to six months.
Applications can be made through the local Portuguese Consular office in the candidate’s area of jurisdiction, and applicants should sign a Declaration stating that the visa application is done under the Memorandum of Understanding on Youth Mobility between Portugal and the US.
All travel expenses will be covered by the participants, including the return ticket or proof of sufficient funds for its purchase, as well as proof of financial capacity to cover expenses for the entire duration of the program. Candidates should also have travel and health insurance to cover any medical expenses, including hospitalization and medical repatriation, valid for the duration of the stay.
