If you want to see the real Portugal and get away from the crowds, there are several ways to do it. How to see the real Portugal? Here are some ideas to skip the lines and experience what makes Portugal so wonderful!


Lisbon, Porto and Algarve. A common plan and question string that pops up daily on social media. you may ask: But what about the rest of the country? Getting off of the beaten path means having social experiences, avoiding lines and souvenir shops and getting to meet real folks who are just glad to share with you their love of a beautiful country.


Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Explore the countryside: Portugal is a country with a rich history and culture, and the countryside is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Rent a car and explore the small villages, vineyards, and olive groves that dot the landscape. You can also go hiking in the mountains or take a bike tour along the coast.

  2. Visit the lesser-known cities and towns: While Lisbon and Porto are popular tourist destinations, there are many other beautiful cities and towns in Portugal that are worth a visit. Some examples include Coimbra, Évora, Braga, and Aveiro. These places offer a more authentic Portuguese experience and are less crowded than the major cities.

  3. Go off the beaten path: There are many hidden corners in Portugal that are not well-known to tourists. For example, you can visit the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, a natural park on the southwestern coast of Portugal that offers stunning beaches and hiking trails. You can also explore the Alentejo region, which is known for its wine and traditional cuisine.

  4. Stay in a small guesthouse or local accommodation: Instead of staying in a big hotel or resort, consider staying in a small guesthouse or local accommodation. This will allow you to meet local people and get a more authentic experience of Portugal.

  5. Visit during the offseason: Portugal can get very crowded during the summer months, especially in popular tourist destinations. Consider visiting during the offseason (September through May) when there are fewer tourists and you can enjoy the country's beauty without the crowds.
