Having issues booking a rail ticket in Portugal?
November 03, 2023
If you're planning a trip to Portugal and want to explore the country's beautiful landscapes and cities by train, you're in luck! Portugal's CP rail network offers an efficient and comfortable way to travel. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to purchase rail tickets online:
-
Visit the Official Website: Start by visiting the official website of Comboios de Portugal (CP), the Portuguese national railway company. The website is available in multiple languages, making it accessible for tourists. Do not use any other site - as CP may refuse you transport - or charge you again.
booking website: www.cp.pt
-
Choose Your Language: Look for language options on the website, typically located in the upper right corner. Select your preferred language to ensure you can navigate the site comfortably.
-
Plan Your Trip: Use the journey planner feature on the website to enter your departure and arrival stations, travel date, and preferred time. This will provide you with a list of available train routes. But, be aware that some cities have more than one station. And not all connect. LISBON Oriente in Lisbon is the closest train station to the airport ( 2 Metro stops), and has service to the Algarve, Porto and the Alentejo. But trains to Sintra depart from Rossio station, while those to Cascais and Estoril depart from Cais do Sodré. Closer to downtown is Santa Apolónia - the end of the line for all trains to the North or South. PORTO Lisbon trains all stop at Porto Campanhã, but your ticket is then valid for a 5 minute trip to São Bento station, right downtown,
-
Select Your Train: Browse through the available train options, taking note of departure times, durations, and ticket prices. Choose the train that best suits your schedule and budget. There are three types of long-distance trains -- the Alfa Pendular (AP) and the Intercidades (IC). The Alfa Pendular is quite fast and makes on a few stops. The Intercidades is a bit slower because it makes more stops, and is a bit cheaper. But if you book in advance you can save! After Santa Apolónia trains stop at Oriente. Both the Alfa Pendular and Intercidades go to Santarém, Leiria Coimbra, Aveiro and Braga, and to the Algarve as well. InterRegional trains stop at every station.
-
Choose Ticket Type: There are usually different ticket types available, such as Standard Class and First Class. Select your preferred class based on your comfort and budget preferences. The difference is a bigger seat.
-
Add to Cart: After selecting your train and ticket type, click the "Add to Cart" or similar button. This action will add your ticket to your shopping cart.
-
Review Your Order: Review your order to ensure that the train, date, and class are correct. Also, check for any additional options, such as seat reservations or insurance.
-
Login or Create an Account: To proceed with the purchase, you may need to log in if you have an existing account on the website. If not, you'll need to create one.
-
Payment: Provide your payment information to complete the purchase. Most websites accept major credit cards, so have your card details ready.
-
Confirmation and E-Ticket: After successful payment, you'll receive a confirmation email with your e-ticket. Make sure to save this email, either digitally or by printing it out, as you'll need it for boarding the train.
-
Boarding the Train: Arrive at the train station a little early on your travel day. You can show your e-ticket to the station staff or at the platform's designated area for validation before boarding.
-
Enjoy Your Journey: Once you're on board, relax and enjoy your journey through the picturesque landscapes of Portugal.
Remember that it's a good idea to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or for long-distance journeys. Portugal's rail system is known for its reliability and convenience, making it a fantastic way to explore this beautiful country.
Happy travels! 🚆🌞🇵🇹
