United Airlines Expands Routes to Portugal with New Flights to Faro and Madeira

Exciting news for travelers eyeing Portugal: United Airlines is launching new direct flights in 2025 from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to two stunning Portuguese destinations: Faro (FAO) in the Algarve and Madeira (FNC). This expansion makes United the only North American carrier, aside from TAP Air Portugal, to link the U.S. to every major Portuguese airport, including its established routes to Lisbon (LIS), Porto (OPO), and Ponta Delgada (PDL) in the Azores.

Starting May 16, United’s Faro flights will operate four times a week, offering travelers an unmatched gateway to Southern Portugal. Then, from June 7, a new route will bring passengers to the stunning island of Madeira three times per week.

Southern Portugal’s Secret: The Alentejo Region

These new routes don’t just open doors to Faro and Madeira—they unlock the hidden gems of Southern Portugal. From Faro, a two-hour drive north reveals the serene Alentejo region. Often overlooked in favor of the Algarve’s famous beaches, the Alentejo is a captivating landscape of cork forests, expansive vineyards, and historic towns. You’ll find villages like Serpa, known for its castle and ancient walls, Mértola with Moorish influences, Castro Verde with its rich agricultural heritage, and Beja, a city steeped in history and Roman ruins.

Bordered by the Atlantic to the west and Spain to the east, Alentejo boasts an allure like no other—ideal for those seeking authentic Portuguese experiences away from the crowds. It’s the perfect blend of scenic drives, wine tasting, cultural heritage, and local hospitality.

Direct Flights from Canada: Another Easy Option to Faro

Canadian travelers are already enjoying the benefits of direct flights to Faro, thanks to Air Transat’s non-stop routes from Toronto. For those in North America seeking ease of travel to Portugal, this connection makes the Algarve more accessible than ever, no matter which side of the U.S.-Canadian border you’re on.

With United’s expanded routes and new non-stop options from Newark, visiting Portugal has never been easier or more enticing. Whether you’re dreaming of the vibrant landscapes of the Alentejo or the dramatic coastlines of Madeira, these flights promise to make 2025 the year to explore Portugal in a whole new way North to Soth..
